Cloud Base Layer - AGL

Your feedback and suggestions

It would be great if there was an option for the cloud base layer to be based on AGL and not MSL values.

This would make the layer a lot more useful for aviation purposes.

I've attached two screenshots. Both show the same location at the same time. Ventusky shows 2000ft, which might sound flyable, but taking terrain into consideration, it is actually not. In Windy I can see it as 300 ft above ground, and also see the terrain height.

Thank you for considering this suggestion.

That seems very impractical to me—the model has a different resolution than reality. If there’s a peak there, you basically don’t know whether the model “sees” it or not. We definitely don’t want to alter the model data in this regard. Even for small valleys in the Alps, a global model will logically return completely nonsensical values (and in fact, if you look at the Alps there, you’ll find that in many locations it shows fog even though there isn’t any, and the cloud base in reality starts about 500 m above the site). After all, in the attached image you can’t see the real terrain at all — the Ore Mountains and similar ranges should clearly stand out there (on AGL map - so it’s a very inaccurate and usseles AGL map).

Of course, showing the elevation of a given location is a good idea. We currently do that in the sidebar. You have to subtract it from there.
