I saw on the news that it upgraded to a Cat5 hurricane currently, but when I look at my Ventusky app (Premium), is only shows current winds around 50-60 with gusts up to 90-100. I understand the default is measured 10m from the ground, but even going up to 100m it is not a whole lot different.
Kevin Wilhelm The value for a Category 5 hurricane is measured over a small area, often by airplanes. These data do not directly enter the models and therefore do not appear directly on the maps.
Milton, a Category 5 hurricane, is moving swiftly towards West Florida, with storm surges potentially reaching 15 feet (5 meters). It is expected to make landfall within 12 hours, likely weakening to a Category 4 due to cold water near the coast.

Hurricane Milton is beginning to weaken slightly. The characteristic eye at its center has now disappeared (see the satellite animation from the last 12 hours), and it has weakened to a Category 4: https://twitter.com/Ventuskycom/status/18439965317... Off the coast of Florida, it is expected to weaken to a Category 3. Even so, it will cause widespread damage, with wind on the coast exceeding 150 km/h / 90 mph.
