Important changes to DWD Open Data

Your feedback and suggestions

Thought I should share some changes to DWD's open data. Firstly, the URL is changing slightly, all the atmospheric models will be under the v1 folder. It is available now, but the old folder will remain until November 30th, 2026: https://opendata.dwd.de/weather/nwp/v1/m/

Files are now plain GRIB2 with one field per file and no .bz2 compression.

The ICON EU model will no longer be on a lat–lon grid, it will be on the native triangular grid same as the other models. The ICON EU domain was enlarged on October 6th. It now extends further south, with a few extra rows in the west and north so Iceland and Norway are fully covered. The resolution is unchanged at about 6.5 km.

Also, visibility will no longer be distributed on any model. DWD’s aviation service judged it unsuitable for visual-flight-rules forecasting.

ICON D2 has a new accumulated freezing rain layer. Also the 15-minute steps are now separate files instead of packing four of them into each hourly file.

There are other changes that I didn't mention, those are just some of the headline updates.

Thank you for summary. We are already aware of this and have implemented the changes. However, we do not plan to expand the ICON-EU coverage area further.
