Names of States and Cities overlap, hard to read

This seems new, at least I don't recall it looking like this. But in the US, for examples, the text names of states and cities are overlapping and make the screen confusing and busy. I don't see a setting to disable these labels. Is it possible to do so, and is this new behavior?

A few of the labels overlap. We'll adjust their positions a bit more. It isn't possible to turn them off.
