Create Custom Color Scales with AI

Custom color scales in Ventusky open up many possibilities for displaying weather data differently from the default colors. And you don’t have to build them manually. External AI tools can create them very effectively – you just need to explain the simple format that Ventusky understands. Each point on the scale contains a value, a HEX color, and opacity as a percentage: (value,#color,opacity in %). Once AI knows this format, instead of choosing individual colors, you can simply focus on describing how you want the final map to look.

The Chat GPT or Gemini prompt itself can be short: “Create a raw color scale for temperature in °C. Highlight temperatures above 30 °C and make the scale rich in color. Return the result exactly in the format (value,#HEX,opacity in %). Use 2 °C steps where finer detail is needed and 5 °C steps elsewhere. Note that the base map should remain visible, so the opacity should not exceed 70%” This tells AI exactly how to prepare the output. It is important to specify the units, as AI uses them to choose the appropriate values and thresholds. For temperature, for example, this means °C or °F; for wind, km/h or mph. The same approach can be used to create scales for other weather parameters as well.

The most interesting part is experimenting with the result. You don’t need to know which HEX code represents the right shade of blue or exactly where orange should begin. You can simply say, “It’s too cool,” “Highlight temperatures above 100 °F more,” “Only show areas below freezing in color,” or “Make it grayscale.” AI will adjust the values, colors, and opacity, and within a few messages you can arrive at a scale that highlights exactly what you want to see on the map.

Once you’re happy with the result, simply copy it and paste it into Ventusky using Import / Export (see Help). Of course, it works the other way around too: you can export an existing scale from Ventusky, paste it into AI, and simply describe what you want to change. Creating color scales becomes a simple process of experimentation. You say what you want to see on the weather map, AI prepares the colors, and Ventusky displays them.
