New Tropical Cyclone Tracker on Ventusky

Ventusky

This season, we introduced a new tropical cyclone tracker on Ventusky. It has been available in our mobile apps since September, and as of today, it is also available on the web. Compared with the previous version, it brings several major improvements.

Cyclone
Comparison of the version before and after the update – the new version displays much more information directly on the map in a clearer and more intuitive way.

In Auto mode, you can now see the cyclone's intensity at a glance. Tropical depressions and tropical storms are shown in grey, while cyclones reaching hurricane, typhoon, or equivalent intensity are color-coded according to Categories 1 to 5 of the Saffir–Simpson scale. The classification is based on wind speed. For the forecast track, we also display a forecast cone showing the area where the center of the cyclone is most likely to move. In Auto mode, the forecast is based on official predictions issued by the meteorological agencies responsible for tropical cyclone forecasting in each region.

In addition to the official forecast, you can display tracks from major global weather models, including ECMWF, GFS, ICON, and GEM. Cyclone intensity is not shown for these model tracks, as global models are not designed to provide precise forecasts of tropical cyclone intensity.

Clicking on any point along the cyclone track opens a detailed information card, including the meteorologists' forecast of its further development. You can also view the cyclone's history in a table, making it easy to follow how its intensity has changed over time.

The new tracker makes it easier to follow tropical cyclones from their formation through their entire life cycle and to compare the official forecast with different numerical weather models.
