Build Your Own Fishing Forecast for Lakes, Rivers and the Sea
There is no single perfect weather forecast for fishing. A lake angler may care most about wind direction and which shore is exposed to it. A river angler needs to watch rainfall upstream. Someone heading offshore has to combine wind, waves, swell and tides.
Fish respond to weather mainly through changes in their environment. Water temperature affects metabolism, light influences feeding and movement, while currents and wind change the distribution of water and food. Research on fish feeding ecology identifies water temperature, light and current velocity among the environmental factors with the strongest effects on feeding and catchability.

1. Lake and reservoir fishing
Wind is one of the most useful weather variables on a lake. It creates waves, mixes the upper layers and changes circulation. Research has also observed wind-driven concentrations of plankton and fish toward downwind parts of lakes, although the effect naturally depends on the lake and species.

This makes wind direction as important as wind speed. A persistent westerly wind creates different conditions on the eastern and western shores of a large lake. Cloud cover is also useful because changing light affects fish vision and feeding behaviour. Temperature is best viewed as a broader trend rather than an isolated afternoon value.

This setup keeps the focus on wind and changing conditions rather than filling the forecast with every available parameter. Pressure is included as a useful indicator of changing weather, but it should not be treated as a magic fishing number. A controlled study on yellow perch, for example, found no statistically significant relationship between barometric pressure and food consumption.
Charts setup
Use: Wind speed · Total cloud cover
Wind speed as a line shows how conditions develop continuously through the day, while cloud cover in bars adds the changing light conditions below it. Together they give a quick view of two factors that can alter conditions across a lake: when the wind strengthens or calms down, and when bright conditions change to heavier cloud cover.

How to use the custom scales above:
To use any of the Custom Color Scales, first open the corresponding weather map on ventusky.com. Then go to Settings → Values on the Map → Color Scales → Edit → Import and paste the entire block of values from this guide. Make sure the selected units match the example, such as km/h for wind. You can use the imported scale as it is or adjust any values, colors or intervals to suit your needs.
This does not define an ideal fishing wind. It simply gives much more visual detail to the range you want to compare across the lake. Combined with wind direction on the map, it can help you quickly identify how conditions differ from shore to shore.
2. River and stream fishing
On a river, weather at your exact fishing spot tells only part of the story. Heavy rain many kilometres upstream can later change flow, turbidity, temperature and the material carried downstream. That makes the spatial view particularly useful: instead of looking only at your fishing location, zoom out and inspect the upstream catchment.

Current velocity itself has a strong influence on feeding ecology because it changes how food is transported and where fish can hold efficiently. Ventusky does not replace a river gauge, but precipitation forecasts can show the meteorological event that may cause conditions downstream to change.

Rain is the core of this preset. Temperature and clouds add information about thermal and light conditions, while CAPE can flag an environment in which showers or thunderstorms may develop. CAPE is therefore more useful here as a weather and safety signal than as a predictor of fish activity.

This pair is particularly useful for timing rain. The line shows how the probability of precipitation changes hour by hour, while the bars show how much precipitation is actually forecast. Use the chart for timing at your fishing location and combine it with the precipitation map to see where the rain is expected across the upstream catchment.
Custom 24-hour Rain Scale
Use the Precipitation layer and inspect accumulated rainfall across the upstream catchment. This scale suppresses nearly dry areas and adds more detail where rainfall totals become more significant:

This is not a flood-warning scale. The same rainfall total can produce very different effects in different catchments. Its purpose is to make the distribution of rainfall upstream easier to read. As the trip approaches, switch to Radar to see where rain is actually falling.
3. Sea and boat fishing
Marine fishing combines two different questions: where are useful fishing conditions, and what will conditions be like on the boat? Tides and moving water affect the distribution of prey and feeding opportunities, while wind, waves and swell determine the sea state.

The interaction between these parameters matters more than one isolated number. The same wave height can produce very different conditions depending on swell period, wind and direction. Ventusky's Sea forecast brings marine parameters such as waves, swell and tides into the same forecast view.

This is deliberately a richer preset than the lake or river versions. Sea surface adds the temperature-related fishing information, while Waves, Swell wave height and Swell wave period describe different parts of the sea state. Tide adds another important part of the daily fishing cycle.

This combination brings together a fishing-related cycle and the changing sea state. The tide line makes it easy to see the progression from low to high tide and back again, while the wave-height bars show how conditions on the water develop during the same hours. Together they can help identify periods when the tidal stage you want overlaps with acceptable sea conditions.
Custom Wave Scale
Wave limits depend on the boat, crew, experience and local conditions. That makes them a good example of why a custom scale can be more useful than a universal one. Set Significant Wave Height to metres:

The values are an example, not a boating safety standard. If 0.8 m is an important threshold for your boat, you can add even more steps around 0.6–1.0 m. A larger vessel may use a completely different range.
Custom Sea Temperature Scale
Sea-surface temperature creates an even more fishing-specific use case. Different species and life stages occupy different thermal ranges, so a global temperature palette can hide the small gradients an angler actually wants to find. If, for example, you want to investigate the 18–22 °C range, use:

The 18–22 °C range is only an example. Replace it with a range relevant to your target species, location and season. The important part is the smaller one-degree increments: temperature boundaries that barely stand out on a broad global scale become much easier to find.

For lakes, focus on wind and changing light conditions. For rivers, watch precipitation across the upstream catchment. At sea, combine sea-surface temperature with wind, waves, swell and tides.
Weather cannot tell you exactly when a fish will bite. But it continuously changes the environment in which fish live. Instead of relying on one generic fishing forecast, build one around the way you fish.
